Magnus Öström is one of Sweden’s top jazz stars, a band leader whose music is effortessly beautiful, drawing its influences liberally from jazz, electronica and rock.
For fifteen years Öström was the drummer with the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), the most successful jazz band in the world at the time.
Following the tragic death of the band’s leader in a diving accident in 2008, it took Öström some time to regroup, and plot his own future musical path, and try to fill the void left by the loss of his close friend.
He has done so emphatically in recent years; with his third solo album release this April set to further affirm Öström’s standing as one of the major players in Scandinavian music.
Although Öström has stepped out of his former band’s huge shadow, his hypnotic and rocky playing - such a major component in defining e.s.t – remains to the fore in creating a sound that has an epic, and cinematic feel. Winner of the ‘best international drummer’ at the Echo Music Awards in 2012, Maghnus Öström’s has surrounded himself with some of Sweden’s top players – pianist Daniel Karlsson, Andreas Hourdakis on guitar, and bassist Thobias Gabrielson.
The music is effortlessly beautiful, the group’s drawing influences from jazz, electronica and progressive rock to create a sound that is positive, optimistic and hymnal in tone and feel. Magnus Öström has collaborated with many of Sweden’s top bands and artists including Bobo Stenson, Nils Landgren, Stina Nordenstam, and internationally with figures such as Benny Golson, Pat Metheny and Michelle Hendricks.
“… utterly beautiful and compelling … the playing is immaculate, the compositions truly inspired, the arrangements magical." – BBC Radio 3
