Jazz is dominated by trios, for reasons aesthetic and economic, but this combination of trumpet, accordion and piano is rare.

It reflects the old adage that in recruiting jazz musicians you choose the person rather than the instrument: here, the improvising personalities determine the sound and spirit of this artful and melodic trio.

The brilliant and legendary French accordionist Galliano is a virtuosic foil for the thoughtful playing of Swedish pianist Lundgren, while Italian trumpeter Fresu adds an elegant fluency to the ensemble. The warmth of the repertoire is complimented by the exquisite playing of all concerned.

The assembly of Paulo Fresu (trumpet),Richard Galliano (accordion) and pianist Jan Lundgren as 'Mare Nostrum' has been likened in some quarters to the creation of the first Eurojazz supergroup.

All have established their credentials playing with big names: Fresu with Carla Bley, Gerry Mulligan, David Liebman, Dave Holland, John Abercrombie, Jim Hall and Toots Thielemans; Galliano with George Mraz, Al Foster, Ron Carter, Chet Baker and Jan Garbarek, while Lundgren has collaborated with Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, Herb Geller, James Moody and singer Stacey Kent, amongst others.

" ... There is an almost delightful sense of trust and ease among the three performers ... Mare Nostrum is a precious gem ... " Christian Genzel, All-Music

" ... The delightful repertoire ranges from Brazilian composers, Swedish folksong and French chanson to impressive originals"- Ray Comiskey, Irish Times

" ... Mare Nostrum has three virtuosi creating a soundscape of contemporary European jazz, which sounds fantastic on stage ... "- Tim Cumming, The Independent / UK)

" ... simply beautiful ... " - Sonic - Germany
