One of the rising stars of Scandanavian jazz, trumpeter Mathias Eick added to his burgeoning reputation when he picked up the prestigious ‘International Jazz Award for New Talent’ in 2007.
Although not yet 30 years of age, he racked up an impressive number of appearances on the ECM imprint before releasing his acclaimed deput ‘The Door’ on the leading European jazz label, last Summer.
Eicks main instrument is the trumpet, but he can plays double bass, vibes, piano and guitar. He has played with Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and closer to home with Trygve Seim, with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and as a director of Norway’s near legendary Jaga Jazzist.
Eick’s tone is redolent of the timbre stretching approaches of Nils Petter MolvÊr and Arve Henriksen, but it also displays a classical purity and a hint of Kenny Wheeler's melancholy lyricism, creating a voice that's become, in a very short time, as distinctly recognizable as his sources.
