Named for the trio’s southern and tropical musical inclinations, SUD sparkles with vibrant and exciting fretwork courtesy of guitarist Sylvain Luc, the Basque French native who pilots a trio with bassist Jean-Marc Jafet and drummer Andre Ceccarelli on a rhythmic journey - borrowing and shifting beats from around the world while proving the love of swing is indeed a universal phenomenon.
Evoking, of course, Reinhardt’s deep legacy, Luc brings an incredible sense of fun and creativity to this music, finding and flexing the dynamics of the group's repertoire, which are a mixture of timeless classics and charming originals.
One of the giants of contemporary European jazz guitar, Luc knows how to play long charming lines where we can hear his fingers brushing the frets, as well as firmly attack the notes for incisive sentences and even use his guitar as a kind of drum.
Jean-Marc Jafet produces round sounds, combining rhythm efficacity which is rigorous as well as feline with an inventiveness in the construction of his solos and his accompaniments.
Jazz enthusiasts should need no introduction to Andre Ceccarelli, a drummer who has been at the forefront of his craft for more than 30 years. Ceccarelli's collaborators read like a who's who of contemporary music - Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Chick Corea, the Brecker brothers, Michel Jonasz, Didier Lockwood, Eric Le Lann, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Enrico Rava, Michel Legrand, Martial Solal, Henri Salvador, Tina Turner, Michel Portal, Jean-Luc Ponty , Eddy Louiss, Sting, René Thomas, Lou Bennett, Slide Hampton, Bireli Lagrène , Antonio Farao ,Claude Nougaro , Gino Vannelli , Richard Galliano and Brad Mehldau amongst them.
Trio Sud's varied repertoire - alternating energy and softness, modernity and references to the tradition, the three musicians give us a poetic walk which drives us from New York jazzclub to Spanish palaces, passing through Brazil, Africa, Basque Country, Mediterranean beaches, Las Vegas’casinos, and Montmartre’s stairs along the way.
