BBC World Music Award winner Solo Cissokho and his vibrant Senegalese combo ‘Cissokho System’ were one of the big hits at the Womax World Music Showcase in Germany, last year.
A master kora player who has appeared with Youssou N’Dour and Ali Farka Toure amongst others, Solo Cissokho has come a long way since he built his first kora at the age of seven in the Casamance district of Senegal.
His music explores the rhythmic and harmonic opportunities inherent in the West-African mbalax style, mixing rich polyrhythmic patterns and infectious melody lines – almost an African counterpart to Brazilian samba, given the joie de vivre the two styles share.
In 2008 Solo Cissokho was awarded one of his career’s highest distinctions: the BBC World Music Award in the Boundary Crossing category.
