What better way to commemorate the centenary of the birth of legendary gypsy jazz great Django Reinhardt than spending an evening in the company of a group whose music takes his cue with dynamism and vitality from the guitarist’s Hot Club of France.
Originally formed by guitarist John Etheridge as a personal tribute to his mentor and inspiration Stephane Grappelli, with whom he worked in the 70’s and early ‘80’s, “Sweet Chorus’ is a must for all fans of melodically inspired swinging acoustic jazz.
Driven by Etheridge’s dazzling guitar work and the scintillating violin of Chris Garrick. Sweet Chorus produce breathtaking sallies through repertoire both old and contemporary, given a propulsive drive by Dave Kelbie on rhythm guitar and Andy Crowdy (bass).
One of the finest guitarists to emerge from the London music scene in the 60s Etheridge jammed with Eric Clapton, went on to play with Soft Machine, and forged a long and productive relationship with Grappelli in the mid-70s. He has also enjoyed successful and fruitful partnerships with violinist Nigel Kennedy, ex-Police guitarist Andy Summers amongst Australian guitar legend John Williams many.
“Listeners who know him best in Soft Machine may be surprised to hear that the guitarist has carved out another life with Sweet Chorus, a small but beautifully formed band who celebrate the legacy of Django Reinherdt and Stephane Grappelli.” The Sunday Times
“Another delightful outing from the wonderful guitarist”– The Evening Standard
