Two of the most compelling and interesting performers in contemporary Irish jazz and improvised music team up for what is certain to be a fascinating exploration of sound.
Reed player Sean Og attracted widespread critical acclaim for his most recent performance piece for woodwinds and electronics, which drew inspiration from the beautiful repertoire of Hildegard Von Bingen, and from sacred Irish music. He mines a rich seam of atmospheric melodies and mesmeric improvisations, producing compositions at one with those that long adorned the melodies of Gregorian chant.
Pianist and keyboard player Justin Carroll is one of the most highly regarded players in contemporary Irish music. The leader of the acclaimed quartet 'Togetherness', he is also a member of Ronan Guilfoyle's 'Metier' ensemble, and has performed with both groups at recent festivals in London, Oslo and Berlin.
Justin Carroll's latest venture is a solo exploration into the sound world of classic analog keyboards and effects. The unmistakable growl of the Fender Rhodes electric piano and gritty tone of analog tape delays and ring modulators help to form Carroll's soundscape which focus on creating textures of rich timbre and minimalist grooves.
He has toured internationally with many musicians including Van Morrison, Ronnie Cuber, Greg Osby, Nils Wogram, Bobby Watson and Jim Mullen.
Justin Carroll was awarded Best Young Irish Jazz Musician at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival in 2007, an award that was presented to his collaborator Sean Og the following year. Sean Og was also recently nominated for ‘Best Sound Design’ at The Irish Times Theatre Awards 2009.
On Sean Og : "[His] pieces are highly original, creative, packed with incident and show a determination to avoid any hint of the clichéd or the safe." - The Irish Times
