BIK SAM

Harbour Bar, Bray 4.30pm

BIK SAM is a great new jazz piano trio composed of three friends from three different continents.

Fronted by South Korean born pianist So-Young Yoon, the trio also includes Brazilian drummer Andre Antunes and Irish bassist Dave Mooney. Together, they create music that draws on a host of diverse influences – Psy’s Gangman Style K-Pop, Moroccan Gnawa music and Brazilian Partido, taking these ideas and influences beyond boundaries.

BIK SAM take a different angle on Herbie Hancock’s New Standard (1996), where late 20th century American and British songbooks were repurposed and animated with different improvisational techniques.

in the midst of the “playlists” era in which listeners have become nomadic, they say that the flexibility to embrace new sounds from different cultures – so normal for TikTok generations – has opened up a host of musical soundscapes for music lovers.
